Dialysis Care
Dialysis Care in Orange County
When the kidneys can no longer sustain life on their own, dialysis replaces their filtering function. We manage all modalities — and we help you choose the one that fits your life.
Dialysis is not one-size-fits-all
There are several ways to perform dialysis, and the right choice depends on your medical situation, your lifestyle, your home environment, and your personal preferences. Our nephrologists take the time to explain every option — and to help you make a decision you can live with, literally.
In-Center Hemodialysis
3 sessions per week, ~4 hours each
The most common form of dialysis in the United States. Blood is circulated through a dialysis machine at a certified center, where trained staff manage the entire treatment. Our physicians round at seven centers across Orange County so your nephrologist remains part of your care team regardless of which center you attend.
Best for
Patients who prefer not to manage dialysis at home, or whose medical complexity benefits from on-site clinical staff.
Considerations
Three full days per week committed to dialysis. Travel to and from the center is required for every session.
Home Hemodialysis
5–7 sessions per week, 2–4 hours each (or nocturnal)
Home hemodialysis uses the same blood-filtering principle as in-center HD, but treatments are performed in your own home on a more frequent, shorter schedule — or overnight while you sleep. More frequent dialysis more closely mimics continuous kidney function, which many patients find improves energy, blood pressure control, and dietary freedom. Our team provides training, ongoing support, and remote monitoring.
Best for
Motivated patients who want greater schedule flexibility, fewer dietary restrictions, and the clinical benefits of more frequent clearance.
Considerations
Requires dedicated training (typically 4–6 weeks), a suitable home environment, a care partner for some modalities, and reliable supply delivery.
Home Peritoneal Dialysis
Daily exchanges — manual (CAPD) or overnight cycler (APD)
Peritoneal dialysis uses the lining of the abdomen (the peritoneum) as a natural filter. A soft catheter is placed in the abdomen, and dialysis fluid is exchanged several times daily or overnight via a cycler machine. There is no needle access and no blood circuit. Patients perform exchanges at home, at work, or while traveling — making PD one of the most lifestyle-compatible dialysis options available.
Best for
Patients who value independence, travel frequently, or wish to avoid the time commitment of in-center HD. Often preferred for residual kidney function preservation early in dialysis.
Considerations
Requires a minor surgical procedure to place the peritoneal catheter. Daily discipline is essential. Not suitable for patients with prior extensive abdominal surgery or certain hernia conditions.
Dialysis planning starts before you need it
The worst time to start dialysis is in an emergency.
Dialysis Centers We Serve
Our physicians round at six centers across Orange County.
The nephrologist and clinical team who manages your care in our office is the same team who sees you at Hoag Hospital and the same team who rounds in your dialysis center. There is no handoff between settings, and no unfamiliar provider reading your chart for the first time. That continuity is the point.
